You often hear stories about how veterans are getting help when they need it. But the stories about former service members who are willing to lend a hand are just as common.

Daneilia Francis, an Army vet who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, got a mortgage through the VA, and used it to buy a home in Brooklyn.

But she did so with the idea of renting part of that property as low-income housing, bringing a small family with a baby into her home as well.

Francis says this effort is part of her larger goal to create more affordable housing overall, especially in areas around New York City where there may not be much available.

This is a passion for her because her family faced similar problems growing up.

This is just another example of the many ways vets continue to serve their country even after they leave the service.
