As first responders venture out into harsh winter conditions to keep their communities safe, they also have to pay special attention to their own safety – the same storms that put motorists and others at risk threaten emergency personnel.

Responding to emergencies in snow and ice calls for preparations such as installing snow tires on all emergency vehicles and undergoing specialized training to ensure rescue crews get to the scene both quickly and safely.

Statistics can show just how serious winter emergencies are – over two days this January, a single Idaho State Police distinct responded to 95 slide-offs, 21 crashes and 32 calls for motorist assistance. The need for civilians and first responders alike to stay safe on the roads is very clear.
