It can be instructive to see how individual states’ Veterans Administration offices use grant money to attend to the unique needs of people in those areas.
The Oregon VA recently received its annual allotment of $500,000 to help veterans in 10 different counties travel to receive health services. Since 2014, the agency has received money to boost transportation programs throughout the state.
In more rural parts of Oregon, it can take hours to reach a VA medical center, and this is where the program comes in.
With volunteers helping veterans make the drives, the money funds dispatchers and fuel costs. The program has proven its worth, with drivers covering over 250,000 miles in 2015.
