The men and women who served in World War II are aging, and groups around the country are on a mission to ensure their stories are preserved for future generations.

The latest to take on this archival duty is 19-year-old Rishi Sharma, who has started his own nonprofit, Heroes of the Second World War. Through video interviews, Sharma hopes to ensure the sacrifices endured during the war won’t be forgotten.

According to National World War II Museum estimates, there are 620,000 Americans alive today who served in the conflict. That’s a mere fraction of the 16 million American servicemen and women who took part. Building a more complete archive of personal memories will help future generations connect with that important era of history.
