The federal government has made a commitment to step up its hiring of veterans for public service jobs and, according to the recently-released data from fiscal year 2015, the program has had some success.

A variety of government departments boosted their efforts to bring veterans into their ranks. In total, 44 percent of all full-time federal hires were vets during the past fiscal year. That’s in line with the percentage over the past five years.

A few departments stood out for their high levels of veteran hiring: The Air Force led the way, with 62.1 percent, followed by the Transportation department, State Department, Social Security Administration and Labor department. Disabled veterans accounted for 43 percent of former service members hired.
