A number of organizations and government programs exist solely to help veterans through whatever issues they encounter, from basic health care needs to homelessness.

The problem is many former service members don’t know about the resources available to them.

That’s why a group called Stand Down recently held a resource fair in Portage, Indiana, to educate vets about what’s out there and how they can tap into it.

In all, more than 30 organizations were in attendance and let veterans know about services that give these individuals everything from free clothes to diabetes screenings.

But perhaps more important was the information at the event about dealing with depression and suicidal thoughts.

When veterans are in times of need, just having the ability to know the assistance that’s available to them will go a long way toward helping them get out of a tough spot.
