Veterans housing programs are taking shape across the country. Each one is slightly different, reflecting the unique character of its region and the needs of the military community in the area. Chelsea, Maine, is about to get more than 20 cabins set aside for vets.

The Maine development, set to open in fall 2017, has been steadily moving toward completion. The groups behind the project are gathering the data required to access funding for construction. The cabins draw their funding from federal low-income housing tax credits and corporate donations.

Modular construction has made the development possible. Cabins will be assembled over the winter as panels, then moved to the site following the construction of concrete foundations. If all goes as planned, the houses will be habitable in under a year.
