There are a variety of treatments available to the thousands of veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome. Recently, mental health professionals added a new technique to the therapeutic toolbox: art therapy.

This novel methodology enables ex-servicemembers to express disturbing emotions and feelings in an constructive manner: through art. The creative process gives PTSD sufferers an outlet through which they can explore and hopefully come to grips with their invisible wounds. Additionally, many of these sessions take place in group settings that allow veterans to connect with fellow servicemembers.

Federal agencies such as the VA and the Department of Defense offer art therapy programs and nationwide showcases of veterans’ artwork. Third-party organizations like the National Intrepid Center of Excellence offer similar programs, as well.
